About Charlestown
Charlestown is a major suburban centre in the Lake Macquarie area of Newcastle, approximately 12 kilometres south-west of the Newcastle CBD. The suburb is anchored by Charlestown Square, one of the Hunter region's largest shopping centres, which provides extensive retail, dining, cinema, and community services for the surrounding suburbs. Property in Charlestown includes well-maintained brick family homes from the 1960s and 1970s on standard suburban blocks, renovated homes, and some newer townhouse developments. The suburb's elevated position provides some properties with glimpses of Lake Macquarie or the coastline. Charlestown is well-positioned between the beaches and the lake, with Dudley Beach and Redhead Beach a short drive to the east, and the shores of Lake Macquarie accessible to the south and west. Charlestown Oval and local parks provide sporting and recreation facilities, while the Fernleigh Track rail trail offers a popular cycling and walking route to the coast. Transport includes regular Newcastle Transport bus services to Newcastle CBD, Belmont, and surrounding suburbs, plus easy road access via the Pacific Highway and Newcastle Link Road to the M1 Motorway for travel to Sydney. The suburb has good schools at all levels and is home to active sporting clubs. Charlestown appeals to families seeking a well-serviced suburb with good amenities and beach proximity at more affordable prices than Sydney, first home buyers, and investors attracted by Newcastle's growing appeal as a lifestyle destination.
