Short summary

Australian full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings reached $2,083.70 in May 2026, up 3.7% over the year in seasonally adjusted terms, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The all-employees average weekly total earnings figure was lower at $1,579.20, up 2.4% over the year. That difference matters: the headline full-time adult figure is not the average pay of every worker and it is not a benchmark for a home loan application.

What changed in May 2026

The ABS released the May 2026 Average Weekly Earnings data on 13 August 2026. The national seasonally adjusted figures were:

Earnings measure May 2026 Annual change
Full-time adult ordinary time earnings $2,083.70 a week +3.7%
Full-time adult total earnings $2,160.00 a week +3.5%
All employees total earnings $1,579.20 a week +2.4%

The ABS media release described annual growth in full-time adult ordinary time earnings as the lowest since May 2022. The six-month increase was 1.6% between November 2025 and May 2026.

These are averages at a point in time. They can move because pay changes, but also because the mix of full-time, part-time, casual and junior employees changes. Industry, occupation and hours can also shift the result.

Why the headline is not the average pay of every worker

The $2,083.70 figure has three important limits in its name:

  1. Full-time excludes part-time employees from this measure.
  2. Adult uses the ABS adult employee classification.
  3. Ordinary time excludes overtime from the ordinary-time measure.

The broader all-employees total earnings series includes full-time and part-time employees and includes overtime. Its May average was $1,579.20 a week, about $504.50 below the full-time adult ordinary-time figure.

Neither figure is a median. An average can be pulled higher by a smaller number of high earnings. The release also does not describe self-employed people in the same way as employees on an employer payroll.

A worked annualisation example

Multiplying $2,083.70 by 52 gives $108,352.40. That arithmetic converts the weekly average to a 52-week equivalent, but it does not turn the ABS statistic into a typical salary.

For comparison, $1,579.20 multiplied by 52 is $82,118.40. The gap comes from using a different population and earnings concept, not from a calculator error.

A person checking a home loan scenario should use their documented gross income, not select whichever national average produces the larger estimate. For variable income, separate base pay from overtime, allowances, bonus or commission and ask the lender what evidence period and treatment it uses.

What it means for borrowing power

The release does not change RealEstateCalc's borrowing-power formula or default values. Aggregate earnings growth is not an instruction to increase one applicant's income.

Lenders assess the income and expenses they can verify, existing debts, loan terms, product policy and a stressed repayment. Different income types may be treated differently. A national earnings average cannot show whether a lender will accept one person's recent overtime, casual shifts, business income or new salary.

The Debt-to-Income Ratio Calculator can divide entered debts by entered gross annual income. It does not reproduce a lender's verification, serviceability or credit decision.

What it means for mortgage repayments

Nothing in the release changes the repayment on an existing loan by itself. Mortgage repayments depend on the loan balance, interest rate, remaining term, repayment type and lender calculation.

Use the Mortgage Repayment Calculator for an entered balance, rate and term. Do not substitute the ABS average for personal income when checking whether a repayment fits a household budget.

State figures are not local salary benchmarks

The original full-time adult ordinary-time averages ranged from $1,846.30 a week in Tasmania to $2,290.20 in the Australian Capital Territory. Western Australia recorded $2,227.40 and New South Wales recorded $2,108.80.

These figures reflect different employment and industry mixes. They do not show the pay for a particular occupation, suburb or employer and should not be used to infer local housing affordability on their own.

A housing comparison also needs prices, deposit requirements, interest rates, existing debts and household expenses. An earnings average is one piece of economic context, not a property valuation or purchase budget.

What remains uncertain

The next Average Weekly Earnings release, covering November 2026, is scheduled for 25 February 2027. Current figures can be revised and later releases can show a different direction.

The series also cannot answer whether wages are keeping pace with a particular household's living costs. It measures gross employee earnings, while household cash flow depends on tax, hours, employment arrangements, debt and spending.
